Enthusiastic Jakarta Residents Hope 43rd ASEAN Summit Will Boost Economic Growth

Jakarta, September 2, 2023 – Jakarta residents are enthusiastically welcoming the 43rd ASEAN Summit to be held next week on 5—7 September 2023 in Jakarta. At the same time, they also have high expectations that the grand event of the Southeast Asian countries will have great impact on future economic growth.

This was revealed by several residents of Jakarta and its surrounding areas who were interviewed separately on Saturday (09/02/2023).

Frisky Febriyan (29), for example, expressed his admiration for the world's trust in Indonesia, which, once again, will host another international forum. Last year, Indonesia served as the host of the G20 Summit in Bali in 2020 and back in May 2023, the country hosted the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara. This time, the country will host its guests in Jakarta.

"(Last year) Indonesia chaired the G20, and now we are chairing ASEAN. I never thought Indonesia’s that great, being trusted by the world to lead various international class events," he said.

Not to mention other world-class events that are also taking place in Jakarta, he added. Such as the 2023 Basketball World Cup or FIBA 2023 at the Indonesia Arena, Gelora Bung Karno complex, Jakarta.

He hopes that the 43rd ASEAN Summit and various other international events can increase the world’s recognition and respect for Indonesia.

"Indonesia is getting recognized by the world, not only as a country that has diverse regional cultural traditions, but also as a modern country that has modern cities, like Jakarta, that are not inferior to other big cities in the world, especially in Southeast Asia," he said.

Meanwhile, Yudha Purnama (45), a Jakarta hotel staff member, is optimistic that Indonesia will become a developed country because it has been recognized for its success in hosting many international events such as the G20, IMF meetings, and several sports events such as MotoGP and FIBA 2023, and even the upcoming U-17 World Cup in 2023.

He urged the youth to take advantage of this momentum where Indonesia is able to attract the attention of the world. "Let's encourage the younger generation not to get lazy and get caught up in following technological advances. Let's use it for positive things, and not spreading hoaxes and pessimism. Indonesia has attracted the attention of the world," Yudha said.

Meanwhile, a 44-year-old employee of a State-Owned Bank in Jakarta, Paramadhita, holds different hopes, especially in the economic sector, from the 43rd ASEAN Summit. She hopes that the 43rd ASEAN Summit can produce more integrated fiscal and monetary policies for better economic recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic.

"One of them is also to push developed countries to be involved in helping through the pandemic fund so that the distribution will be faster," she said.

When asked about the traffic diversion around the venues of the 43rd ASEAN Summit, the three Jakarta residents said it is reasonable because, as the host, Indonesia must provide the best possible service to their guests.

"Road users around the locations may have to make few adjustments, but I think it's reasonable because we have to give the best service to our guests to maintain the trust to host other future international events,” concluded Paramadhita. (Alex/Elvira/TR)
