Electric Vehicles at 43rd ASEAN Summit: Indonesia's Commitment to Energy Transition

Jakarta, September 2, 2023 – Electric vehicles will be the primary mode of transportation during the 43rd ASEAN Summit hosted at the Jakarta Convention Center from 5—7 September 2023. The availability of hundreds of environmentally friendly vehicles is the result of participation from Indonesia’s automotive industry ecosystem.

Their use as the main mode of transportation for international official events in Indonesia is also a way to show support for the Indonesian government. The development of electric vehicles itself is an effort to transition from fossil fuels to new renewable energy sources.

The 43rd ASEAN Summit 2023, which will take place after the 42nd ASEAN Summit 2023 in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, on 9 – 11 May 2023, and the G-20 Summit in Nusa Dua Bali, on 15 – 16 November 2022 will mark the third time that national automotive manufacturers have participated in international events.

Four national car manufacturers—PT BMW Indonesia, PT Hyundai Motors Indonesia (HMID), PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), and Wuling Motors—collaborated and lent their four-wheeled vehicles in order to provide the operational fleet for the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta.

BMW Indonesia has handed over 36 of their latest products, the BMW i7 xDrive60 Grand Lusso, to the State Secretary, Pratikno.

The handover was conducted by the Senior Vice President of Sales Region for Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, Jean-Philippe Parain in Jakarta on 6 June 2023.

According to Jodie O'tania from the Corporate Communications Department of BMW Indonesia when contacted in Jakarta on Saturday, 2 September 2023, all vehicles only require 34 minutes for an 80 percent battery charge. The vehicles are currently located in the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (GBK) Complex in Senayan, which will serve as the main venue for the 43rd ASEAN Summit 2023.

Jodie said that they have also provided special training to the Presidential Security Details (Paspampres) personnel who will be operating these German-made vehicles.

"We provided special training to the Paspampres on how to drive them, including information on the special features of the BMW i7," she said.

Additionally, HMID has lent a total of 74 units of Hyundai IONIQ 6 and 272 units of IONIQ 5 for the 43rd ASEAN Summit 2023. The handover took place at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show 2023 in Tangerang, Banten, on 11 August 2023. The IONIQ 6 units will be used for the official transportation of VVIP delegates, while the IONIQ 5 will serve as protocol vehicles, security vehicles, rescue vehicles, and operational vehicles for the national committee.

Setya Utama, Secretary of the Ministry of State Secretariat, expressed his gratitude for the support of Hyundai Motors Indonesia at the ASEAN Summit. "We are grateful for the support of Hyundai Motors Indonesia for the 43rd ASEAN Summit 2023, following their previous support during the ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo and the G-20 Summit in Bali," said Setya.

Meanwhile, Woojune Cha, the President Director of HMID, expressed his delight at being a part of the 43rd ASEAN Summit 2023 and his full support for Indonesia's chairmanship in this ASEAN Summit.

Furthermore, TAM has lent a total of 76 units of Toyota Bz4X to be utilized as official vehicles for high-ranking officials participating in the 43rd ASEAN Summit 2023, while WMI has lent 150 small electric cars known as Wuling AirEv for operational use.

According to Brian Gomgom, Public Relations Manager of Wuling Motors in his statement in Jakarta, on Sunday, 2 September 2023, all the first electric car units of Wuling in Indonesia are in pristine white with special livery.

The 43rd ASEAN Summit 2023 official logo is displayed on the right and left doors, while the car’s sides are decorated with a traditional Betawi batik motif with representations of the Brahminy Kite bird and jasmine that is primarily orange and dark purple in hue. Additionally, the red and white flag is present on the front hood. "The special pattern design is inspired by batik as one of the cultural products of the Betawi people, the native Jakarta tribe," he stated. (Anton Setiawan/Donna/TR)
