Labuan Bajo, Kominfo Newsroom - The 17th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC) taking place in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, will discuss ten priority issues of transnational crime.
The statement was conveyed by the Head of the Public Information Bureau, the Public Relations Division of the National Police, Brigadier General Pol. Ahmad Ramadhan, in West Manggarai Regency, NTT, Monday (21/8/2023).
"The total number of the meeting participants reaches 250 people and the 17th AMMTC discussed ten priority issues of transnational crime, which are a common concern," said Ramadhan.
The 17th AMMTC in Labuan Bajo lasts four days, 20-23 August 2023. It is a ministerial-level meeting that specifically discusses issues of transnational crime in ASEAN. The meeting has been officially opened by President Joko Widodo online.
Ten priority issues on transnational crime discussed at the international meeting are terrorism crimes, cybercrimes, arms smuggling, illegal wildlife and timber trade, drug trafficking, money laundering, international economic crimes, sea piracy, people smuggling, and human trafficking.
Ten ministers of ASEAN member countries attend the meeting. In addition, three dialogue partner countries from China, Japan and South Korea, Timor Leste as an observer; directors of ASEAN Immigration; secretary general of ASEAN; and other delegations are also present.
In the opening report, the National Police Chief Gen. Pol. Listyo Sigit Prabowo said that transnational crimes continue to pose a serious threat to the ASEAN region amid the current progress.
Therefore, he hoped that the 17th AMMTC could serve as a platform for ASEAN to assess each country's progress and collaboration in overcoming existing challenges as well as developing practical strategies and directions for future actions.
Listyo Sigit also expected that the draft declaration in efforts to tackle human trafficking, terrorism, and weapons smuggling can be agreed upon by the ministers at the 17th AMMTC.
"It is the right momentum for concrete achievements in efforts to create a safe ASEAN region, through increased cooperation in overcoming transnational crime," said Ramadhan.
In the opening video of his remarks, President Jokowi said that transnational crimes are seriously threatening the security and stability of the ASEAN region.
Jokowi hoped that the international meeting will formulate a cooperation agenda that is responsive and contains strategic steps, so that it can keep the ASEAN region safe, peaceful, and prosperous.
