Indonesia Raises Food Security Issue at the Second AFMGM

Jakarta, Kominfo Newsroom – Indonesia, as Chairman of ASEAN 2023, is bringing up the issue of food security, at the second Meeting of Ministers of Finance and Central Bank Governors (AFMGM).

Yogi Rahmayanti, head of the Ministry of Finance's Center for Regional and Bilateral Policy, stated that the initiative seeks to discuss the issue of food security from a financial standpoint.

"This year, Indonesia will also carry financial support for food security issues that will be discussed at the ASEAN Summit," Yogi said during a press briefing in Jakarta on Monday (28 August).

Yogi explained that Thursday's (13 July) Joint Forum on Food Security in Yogyakarta marked the beginning of discussions on the issue of food security. The forum is part of a series of working group-level AFMGM activities.

Through this forum and other AFMGM activities, Indonesia hopes to be able to present a food security guide that ASEAN nations can use as a reference. Thus, they are able to anticipate and surmount food security issues in their respective countries.

Yogi stated that after holding a forum to discuss food security issues, the next move will be to seek funding support.

Next, we will see this funding support. The issue of food security funding will be addressed by a cross-sectoral committee, so later, we will reach an agreement on this matter, said Yogi.

The second AFMGM, which will be conducted from tomorrow (August 22) through Friday (August 25) is the initiative of Indonesia to hold a meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors.

This seeks to track the progress of the goals established at the first AFMGM and provide a forum for discussing global issues and economic challenges.

The second AFMGM focuses on three Priority Economic Deliverables (PED), namely recovery-rebuilding, the digital economy, and sustainability.

Indonesia, as the 2023 ASEAN Chair, did indeed initiate the Minister of Finance and Central Bank Governors Meeting (AFMGM) 2023.

Yogi Rahmayanti stated, "We see the need for another meeting to determine whether the goals we have set can be attained, especially this time at the second AFMGM under the Indonesian Chairmanship."

According to her, one of the primary reasons for the meeting is that the world is currently facing a number of unpredictable challenges, such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the United States' interest rate policy, and indications of an economic slowdown in China.

In the first PED, efforts to promote recovery and assure economic and financial stability and resilience were emphasized. Recovery and reconstruction discussions included financial and health sector collaboration, infrastructure financing, and regional tax cooperation.

Discussions on the digital economy also include digital financial services and literacy, business matching forums, as well as policies at the ASEAN level that target the growth of the MSME sector. (Imamatul Silfia/TR)
