Indonesian President Invites ASEAN to Collaborate on Cross-border Crime

Labuan Bajo, Kominfo Newsroom Indonesian President Joko Widodo invited fellow member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to collaborate in overcoming cross-border crime.

"We need to build sustainable collaboration to exchange information, utilize technology, and increase the capacity and professionalism of the apparatus," said the President in a video recording of his remarks at the 17th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transboundary Crime (AMMTC) in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Monday, 21 August.

Amid global dynamics, continued Joko Widodo, ASEAN must always be ready to face challenges, including eradicating transnational crime, which poses a serious threat to the security and stability of the region.

Joko Widodo also highlighted that with current technological advancements, transnational crimes are growing increasingly massive in complex ways.

So, he added, the handling of these crimes must also be more adaptive, especially about criminal acts of terrorism, criminal acts of human trafficking, and illicit narcotics trade.

"I hope that at this meeting, a responsive cooperation agenda can be formulated, which contains strategic steps so that we can maintain a safe, peaceful, and prosperous ASEAN region," said President Joko Widodo.

Previously, the National Police (Polri)stated that Indonesia had prepared materials on domestic crimes to be discussed at the 17th AMMTC, which will last until Wednesday, August 23.

Polri encourages cooperation between ASEAN member countries to catch perpetrators of domestic crimes who have fled from Indonesia abroad.

Apart from domestic crimes, Indonesia also proposed several issues to be discussed at a meeting chaired by the Indonesian National Police Chief, General Pol. Listyo Sigit Prabowo.

As chairman, Listyo Sigit will also raise issues of increasing cooperation and strengthening coordination in tackling transnational crime because it is the focus of ASEAN countries. (Yashinta Difa Pramudyani/Franciska Ninditya/Elvira Inda Sari)
