West Manggarai, 7 May 2023 – Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and Indonesian National Police (Polri) have taken steps to mitigate various problems that may occurr during the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara.

The National Police Chief said he had prepared a solution regarding a rally at the 42nd ASEAN Summit. Polri will also establish communication with parties who wish to convey their opinions through rallies.

"We hope that we can mitigate the existing problems and solve them. We will help communicate to people on the rally and handle them," said National Police Chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo in his statement in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, Sunday, 7 May 2023.

"On one hand, we still give them freedom of expression. But, on the other hand, it shouldn't interfere with the ASEAN Summit. That's the main thing," said Sigit.

Furthermore, another matter of concern is related to the threat of interference with acts of terrorism.

Sigit said he had held a meeting and prepared a detection task force to monitor the movements of suspected persons.

"We have assigned them to several locations, starting from the airport, venue, accommodation, and the routes so we can monitor the suspected targets on surveillance. If they are on our radar, we will immediately take steps," explained Sigit.

Security officers have prepared K-9 and bomb squads to anticipate the threat related to suspicious goods or objects. Thus, it can prepare for the evacuation of things like that.

"However, don't let it become an issue that interferes with the ASEAN Summit," he said.

The series of meetings of the 42nd ASEAN Summit will take place from 8-11 May 2023. The two main locations for the 42nd ASEAN Summit are the Meruorah Labuan Bajo Hotel and the Ayana Labuan Bajo Hotel. The ASEAN Leaders will discuss several important issues to encourage a more solid ASEAN region in facing challenges and strengthen ASEAN's economic resilience. This effort is in line with the theme carried out by the Indonesian Chairperson of ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth (Fransiska Antara/TR/Elvira/WS)
