Police to Adopt G20 Summit Security Protocol in 2023 ASEAN Summit

The Indonesian National Police (Polri) is gearing up ahead of the 42nd ASEAN Summit which will take place in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on 9—11 May.

It was said by Polri's Public Relations Division Head Inspector General Sandi Nugroho in Jakarta on Friday, 7 April.

He revealed that the police would adopt the G20 Summit security protocol in Bali last year.

“(The security) is being prepared using the successful G20 security measures," he said.

However, Sandi did not reveal the details being done by the police. He highlighted that the Indonesian National Police Head General Listyo Sigit Prabowo reminded his ranks to prepare for the 2023 ASEAN Summit's security carefully.

At a handover ceremony of several senior officers and seven regional police chiefs at Polri's headquarters on Friday, 31 March, General Listyo ordered his ranks to focus on and pay extra attention to several national and international agendas. "(The events' organization) must be secure, smooth, and under control,” said Sandi quoting the Polri chief.

The closest event will be Eid al-Fitr in which around 123.8 million people will travel during the holiday. It will be followed by the international agenda of the 2023 ASEAN Summit.

At the G20 Summit in Bali in November 2022, Polri carried out Operation Puri Agung which became the Police's standard for international events security.

More than 13,000 police personnel were involved in securing the G20 Summit. The personnel was derived from Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Java regional police forces.

The police also used the latest security technology in securing the G20 Summit, namely Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) and face recognition. The technology was used to maximize the detection of people who were on the People Search list (DPO).

Equipped with face recognition technology, the police kept on conducting strict checks on people who entered and left Bali.

The police also used electric vehicles during Operation Puri Agung. Hundreds of electric cars were delivered from Jakarta to Bali.

Indonesia continued to gain the international community's trust. Since 1 January, Indonesia officially assumed the chair of ASEAN.
