Indonesian Crafts for ASEAN

Indonesia is a treasure trove of crafts. From Sabang to Merauke, various types of crafts can be found easily with their own local wisdom. Every region in Indonesia has its own uniqueness in terms of craft products such as wayang (shadow puppets), metal, cloth, wood, and others. Due to their uniqueness and creativity, many Indonesian products are popular among foreign tourists and even become export products.

Indonesian craft exports include Batik cloths, wood carving crafts, wayang, woven crafts, metal crafts, and stone crafts. The export potential of craft products is estimated at around Rp11 – 14 trillion in 2023. The export destinations for crafts, previously dominated by Japanese, European (Great Britain and Dutch), and ASEAN markets, are starting to diversify to non-traditional markets such as African and Latin American markets. Various Indonesian crafts have good potential in the ASEAN market. For example, decorative pet cages are in demand in Malaysia.

According to data from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, the export value of the creative economy has reached US$24.79 billion with an added value of Rp1.236 trillion as of November 2022. Previously, the export value of the Indonesian creative economy was US$23.9 billion in 2021 and only US$18.8 billion in 2020.

Fashion, handicrafts, and culinary are commodities with the largest contribution to Indonesian foreign exchange. In addition to these three, other commodities such as game apps, television, radio, photography, advertising, publishing, performing arts, and visual arts are promoted as Indonesia’s leading creative economy commodities in the ASEAN, Asian, or global markets.
