Getting to Know the Abuse of Technology and Its Prevention Efforts

In fact, the rapid development of technology provides many conveniences in everyday life. Unfortunately, despite the convenience provided, some people rarely realize some risks. One of which increases the risk of abuse of technology. So, what is an abuse of technology?

In short, abuse of technology is a criminal act committed by misusing technology. Generally, crimes involving misuse of technology result in human trafficking in persons by abuse of technology.

The issue of human trafficking is one of the critical issues discussed at the 42nd ASEAN Summit 2023 meeting in Labuan Bajo. Many cases of human trafficking occur through fraudulent methods by utilizing information and communication technology developments.

Even worse, the annual report on the situation of human trafficking issued by the United States Ministry of Foreign Affairs, entitled "Trafficking in Person Report 2022" explained that more and more countries in the Southeast Asian region are becoming fields for human trafficking practices.

Prevention of Human Trafficking in the Midst of Technological Development

Quoting Kompas.id, migrant workers have a significant contribution to the growth of the ASEAN region. Unfortunately, ASEAN is still a vulnerable area for migrant workers. In fact, not a few migrant workers are trapped in human trafficking practices due to the misuse of technology.

Concerns about the increasing misuse of technology in cases of human trafficking in Southeast Asia require all ASEAN countries to be more assertive. As Chair of ASEAN 2023, Indonesia seeks to strengthen the eradication of human trafficking in ASEAN. Both eradication at the bilateral and regional levels.

Eradication and prevention are carried out by collective regional handling efforts. One way to do it is by reaffirming the legal instruments that have been stipulated, namely the ASEAN Convention Against Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children.

In addition, the eradication of cases of human trafficking due to technological crimes was also carried out by agreeing on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Recruitment and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers. The agreement was made to regulate the use of a one-channel system for recruiting and monitoring migrant workers.

On the other hand, the prevention of human trafficking will also be carried out by increasing mutual legal assistance due to the abuse of technology. This is done by effectively implementing the ASEAN Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters (AMLAT). Thus, it is hoped that in the future, the ASEAN region will not be a "safe haven" for criminals.
