Australia, Japan Affirm ASEAN as Top Priority

Jakarta, September 6, 2023 - The Prime Ministers of Australia and Japan, both ASEAN Partner countries, emphasized ASEAN as important partner. They express their commitment to deepen collaboration with ASEAN on the second day of the ASEAN-Indo-Pacific Forum (AIPF) held at Hotel Mulia, Jakarta, September 6, 2023.

"The centrality of ASEAN is of utmost importance for Australia, we share the same trust in this region. ASEAN is Australia's economic destiny. We are building upon a strong foundation, and there is still untapped potential," said Prime Minister Australia Anthony Albanese.

Furthermore, he suggested cooperation on issues in the fields of agriculture, energy security, infrastructure, and education.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan outlined the significant relationship between Japan and Indonesia, which he described as a "powerful driver of the global economy."

He reiterated Japan's support for the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific. ASEAN and Japan will hold a Summit for commemorating the golden jubilee of the ASEAN-Japan cooperation in the end of December this year, and a new vision for ASEAN-Japan will be launched.

The second day of AIPF also featured panel discussions, briefings, and a CEO fireside chat with the sub-theme "Green Infrastructure and Resilient Supply Chain."

Present in the panel discussions were the CEO of Loca Laos, the Executive Chair and Founder of Aspen Medical, the Special Advisor to the President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the Finance Director of Pertamina, the Finance Director of MIND ID, the Chief Commercial Officer of Logistics DP World Asia Pacific, as well as the Vice President and Head of the Future Business Group at Hyundai Motor ASEAN Headquarters.

The discussions also highlighted the strong commitment and participation from the private sector in creating resilient and green supply chains amidst future shocks and disruptions, also need to be anticipated by the region.

Furthermore, a briefing by Indonesia's Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Pahala Mansury, underscores the Indonesian government's strategy to achieve Net Zero by 2050. This includes building green infrastructure, increasing renewable energy capacity, enhancing biofuel production, developing green industry clusters (such as ASEAN Grid) to support the EV ecosystem, and connectivity policies, such as green port development.
