AIPF Connects Public and Private Sectors in the ASEAN Indo-Pacific Region

Jakarta, 5 September 2023 – Complementing the 43rd ASEAN Summit, the ASEAN Indo-Pacific Forum (AIPF) takes place on 5-6 September 2023, at the Mulia Hotel, Jakarta.

This event is the first AIPF. Carrying the title "Implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific", AIPF is one of the featured events at this summit. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) delivered a speech at the opening of AIPF.

AIPF aims to connect the private and public sectors in the ASEAN Indo-Pacific Region for stronger cooperation. This forum will be a platform for ASEAN member states and ASEAN external partners. They are expected to engage in constructive discussions that produce concrete projects that ultimately increase collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region.

In AIPF 2023, there are three sub-themes: green infrastructure and a resilient supply chain, innovative sustainable payments, and inclusive digital transformation and the creative economy.

The forum features leaders' talks, fireside chats, panel discussions, project showcases, and business matching sessions. The forum participants are executives and leaders of the public and private sectors from ASEAN member states and partner countries.

The remarks at the opening of the AIPF were conveyed by the State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir, who serves as the Side Event Coordinator of Indonesia's 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship.

"AIPF will be an important momentum to showcase, strengthen, and expand public-private sector collaboration in the ASEAN and Indo-Pacific regions, which will make ASEAN the epicenter of growth," said Minister Erick Thohir.

According to Erick, the opening presented two plenary sessions. The first item on the agenda is an overview of the region, followed by a brief review of the three AIPF sub-themes. On the second day, there will be Leaders' Talks sessions, Panel Discussions, and Business Matching with current and potential investors.

Representatives from various organizations and private sector leaders will appear at AIPF as speakers. They are from, among others, the World Bank, IMF, World Economic Forum, ASEAN-BAC and Chamber of Commerce, Maybank, Airbus, Aspen Medical, Forest Carbon Microsoft, Business Council Canada, European Investment Bank, Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs, BP, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, US Trade and Development Agency, Loca Laos, Amazon, and Fairatmos.

The first AIPF also presents various superior projects in Indonesia and throughout the Indo-Pacific, in line with the AIPF sub-theme. Indonesian state-owned companies, including BRI, Pertamina, PLN, Bank Mandiri, BNI, MIND ID, Telkom Indonesia, and InJourney will actively participate in AIPF 2023.

The AIPF is a real implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP), which was adopted by ASEAN member states in 2019. The AOIP initiative itself aims to strengthen an inclusive regional architecture, encourage collaboration, strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation, and seize the opportunities in the Indo-Pacific region.

The ASEAN region has sufficient capital to become the center of world economic growth. ASEAN's collective gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021 reached US$3.3 trillion. This figure makes ASEAN the fifth largest economic region in the world. With a population of more than 660 million people, ASEAN has great potential to become a cooperation partner.

The regional forum of the 43rd ASEAN Summit provides an important opportunity for member states of the association and Indo-Pacific countries to unite and chart the direction of cooperation and inclusive growth in the future.

The opening procession was broadcast live on the Presidential Secretariat YouTube account. Meanwhile, other AIPF sessions will be broadcast live on the SOEs Ministry's YouTube channel.
