50 SOE Millennials Clean Up Waste at ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo

West Manggarai, 12 May 2023 Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir expressed his appreciation for the collaboration in waste management carried out by Rumah BUMN and startup PlusTik to collect 2.6 tons of waste during the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, Manggarai West, East Nusa Tenggara.

"In line with the commitment of the SOE Ministry to focus on one of the pillars of development, namely the environment," said SOE Minister Erick Thohir in an official statement received in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, Friday, 12 May.

The SOE Ministry has deployed 50 SOE Millennials from BRI, Pertamina, Mandiri, Telkomsel, Pegadaian, Pelindo, HIN, and PELNI, to participate in supporting the BUMN Youth Environmental Movement at Binongko Beach Labuan Bajo on Thursday. BUMN Millennials with startup PlusTik collected plastic waste around the beach to express their love for the environment. They also clean up waste at Waecicu Beach, Kukusan Island, Waterfront Marina, and Pede Beach.

The plastic waste collected from Sunday to Thursday weighed 2.6 tons. The waste is to be processed and upcycled into useful material for fishing boats, paving blocks, and cell phone holders. Products resulted from the waste recycle were displayed in the Rumah BUMN SME's Hub booth at Waterfront City Labuan Bajo on 9-13 May 2023.

Cleaning up waste around the beach is part of environmental activities in Rumah BUMN SME's Hub events, one of the side events of the ASEAN Summit.

Erick Thohir hopes that the collaboration between the SOE Ministry and startup PlusTik can trigger awareness among the younger generation about the importance of protecting the environment.

He emphasized that this was in line with the ministry's commitment to promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and providing real benefits for the environment.

"We also pay attention to the latest environmental issues around the community so that the programs developed can overcome existing environmental problems," said Erick Thohir. (Franciska Antara/TR/Elvira/WS/PPR)
